Where it all began…

RivaReno Gelato hails from Italy, with origins from Bologna, the gastronomic capital of Italy and the world.

Born out of passion, imagination, dedication and determination to bring to the market the very best possible Italian gelato, RivaReno Gelato was created by two Italian gelato-makers and three friends, one of whom was a former BBC journalist, and one who was a successful former Italian car executive. The partners had for a long time wished to produce a gelato with uncompromising quality and in the city of Bologna they commenced their plans, with the first store opening in Milan in 2005.

Reminiscent of the city where it all began, RivaReno shares the same name as a neighbourhood in Bologna. Rich in history and significance, the name was chosen to pay homage to the region of Emilia Romagna, whose people exhibit strength, passion and commitment in all that they do, and most importantly, gastronomy.

RivaReno Gelato’s unique taste and consistency was immediately recognised by national and international gastronomic critics. In its first year, RivaReno was mentioned by the exclusive Louis Vuitton guide. In the second year, RivaReno was mentioned in the Gambero Rosso and Golosario guides. In 2008, Rivareno received the prize “Migliore gelateria d’Italia” (best gelato in Italy) from the Golosaria association ( the leading Italian independent food guide and one of the most prestigious food titles in Italy). The title “Maestri del Gusto” (Masters of Taste) from Slow Food, one of the leading international organisations for the promotion of high quality healthy food and biodiversity (RivaReno has won this title on several occasions, in succession). Masters of Taste is one of the most prestigious food titles in Italy. RivaReno is mentioned and reviewed with maximum votes in the principal travel guides like “Lonely Planet” and “Trip Advisor”. Trip Advisor reviews were many and extremely positive, in a country with so much competition, leading to Trip Advisor awarding RivaReno the “Certificate of Excellence”. This recognition is based directly on customer reviews on Trip Advisor, the site that provides the greatest number of customer reviews globally. RivaReno obtained its top classification based on the number of testimonials to the excellence and quality of its gelato.

With the first RivaReno Gelato store opening in 2005 in Milan, other stores opened soon after across Italy; including Turin, Ferrara, Florence and Rome and internationally; Australia, Malta and Spain. We are particularly proud that Sydney, Australia was the location for the first store to open outside Italy, in February 2013 in Darlinghurst.
